PORTEUS – portables Live-Betriebssystem

Kürzlich ist mir bei einer Anfrage PORTEUS eingefallen, was ich vor Jahren mal probiert hatte. Dann hab ich gesehen, dass das immer noch fleißig weiterentwickelt wird und jetzt sogar mit Cinnamon angeboten wird.
Einen USB-Live-Stick mit Porteus-CINNAMON-v5.0rc2-x86_64.iso erstelltt und bin nun ziemlich begeistert.
Rattenscharfes portables Live-Betriebssystem, extrem leichtgewichtig, anpassbar, verschiedene clevere Bootoptionen (copy2ram, Starten mit gespeicherten Änderungen oder nativ) sind möglich. Basis ist Slackware.  Man kann mehrere Gastkonten einrichten.
Für eine RC-Version funktioniert erstaunlich viel ohne Problem.

Anfangs wollte ich schon aufgeben, weil ich es stundenlang nicht geschafft habe, das ISO bootfähig auf den USB-Stick zu übertragen. Das ist ziemlich verzwickt.
Dann ging es aber mit einem Umweg über Live-CD doch ganz leicht (364 MB !).
Das Live-System enthält dafür das Programm "Porteus Installer".
Ähnlich wie die Installation auf einen USB-Stick kann man auch eine interne oder externe Festplatte als Ziel nehmen (sog. "frugale Installation"), wobei die ISO-Datei nicht entpackt, sondern in komprimierten Zustand auf den Datenträger geschrieben wird. Das ist keine reguläre Installation wie bei einem LinuxMint.

Glücklicherweise hat meine seit Jahren in der Schublade liegender CD-Drehmaschine noch funktioniert. Allerdings merkt man beim Arbeiten mit einem optischen Laufwerk wieder deutlich den gewaltigen Geschwindigkeitsvorteil der SSDs oder Flash-Speicher.

Bin gerade mit Porteus unterwegs, macht echt Spass .

Ich bin eher der interessierte Anwender, nicht so sehr der Baumeister. 
Außerdem ist die Basis "Slackware" für mich völliges Neuland, obwohl es die älteste noch aktive Linux-Distribution ist, etwas Anderes als Mint-Ubuntu-Debian.

Aber ich meine gesehen zu haben, dass Porteus auch die Möglichkeit bietet, ein eigenes ISO zu erstellen.
Allerdings fehlt mir im Moment etwas der Überblick, bin noch dabei, die vielen Möglichkeiten zu entdecken.

Jedenfalls kann man gemachte Änderungen dauerhaft auf dem Stick abspeichern, bzw. geht das zumindest im Normalbetrieb teilweise automatisch.
Voraussetzung ist eine Partition (sdb1) mit Linux-Dateisystem, auf die das Live-System übertragen wurde. Ich hab ext2 genommen. Auf FAT oder NTFS überleben Änderungen keinen Neustart (Porteus wechselt dann in den "Always Fresh"-Modus), es kann aber ein spezieller Container für dauerhafte Speicherung (Persistenz) eingerichtet werden.

Eine zweite Partition (sdb2) mit FAT32 Dateisystem für persönliche Daten ist möglich. Ebenso Verschlüsselung.

Für mich Mausschubser aber sehr angenehm, im Kontextmenü (Rechtsklick) das vertraute "als Root öffnen".

Porteus can be installed to a flash drive or hard
drive in several ways.

FOR EFI SYSTEMS:
Ensure the first partition is of type FAT32.
a) Copy the EFI, boot and porteus folders onto the FAT32 partition.
You may create a second partition with a linux filesystem for the porteus folder.
If you do so, you need to add the from=/mnt/sdb2 cheatcode to the porteus-v4.0-x86_64.cfg file.
This file is located in the porteus folder.

FOR BIOS SYSTEMS:
From Windows:
a) copy the contents of the ISO image to your drive
b) navigate to the \boot folder and launch the
'Porteus-installer-for-Windows.exe' script
c) verify you are installing to the correct drive and press 'Enter' to complete the installation

From any Linux Distribution other than Porteus:
a) copy the contents of the ISO image to your drive
b) navigate to the /boot folder and launch the installer 'bash Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com'
c) verify you are installing to the correct drive and press 'Enter' to complete the installation

From Porteus itself (booted from CD):
a) launch 'Porteus Installer' from the desktop menu, under the 'System' heading
(if you are prompted for the root password, it is toor)
b) plug in your usb drive or select a partition on a hard drive
c) follow the on-screen instructions
